BEYOND THE GLASS! PART FOUR

Beyond the Glass is a God-breathed idea? I spent many years being a wife & mom. I gave so much to my family that I sacrificed my own desires and aspirations. With my daughter off to college I spent much of my time asking God to give me something of substance, something I could grow and that would bless others.

One day I woke up and it came to me...paint bottles!, and although it may have sound a little strange, It was different and I did exactly that!! Yes, there were challenges and lessons learned along the way but when Gods got a plan and you are willing, all things are possible. The mission of Beyond the Glass is to give people a moment of Freedom to express art from deep within and create lasting memories.

In this presentation, guest will learn how to clean labels from wine bottles and decorate for an artistic masterpiece in their home or office.

This event is FREE, and open to the public. RSVP is strongly encouraged.

BEGINNERS YOGA CLASS

This beginner’s yoga series introduces the fundamentals of yoga, meditation, and breathwork. In this Hatha Yoga-based class we will practice poses (asanas) and stretches, in combination with breathwork and meditation in order to develop flexibility, tools for stress and anxiety reduction, better health, and relaxation. These classes will help to bring balance, strength, and calmness to you, the practitioner. This class is great for Beginners to Levels 1 and 2 yoga practitioners.

Please Note: Yoga mats and/or Yoga blocks will NOT be provided.

Classes are each week February 15 - March 22

This event is free, and open to public. CLICK TO RSVP, strongly encouraged!

HELPFUL TIPS, STUDIO ETIQUETTE & GUIDELINES

  • GET THERE EARLY: Arrive at least ten minutes before your yoga class to get a spot where you feel most comfortable.
  • WHAT TO WEAR: Wear clothing that is both comfortable and made from breathable fabric (like cotton, bamboo or jersey).
  • WHAT TO BRING: Please bring your own yoga mat and an optional 1-2 blocks if possible. There will NOT be any mats provided.
  • AFTER YOU ARRIVE: Take off your shoes and socks in the room.
  • COMMUNICATE: Before class starts, introduce yourself to the instructor. Tell the instructor whether you have any injuries, especially a recent one, so he or she can give you modifications.
  • BREATHE: It's common for new students to hold their breath during yoga poses they find challenging. Breathing deeply can help you relax. In the beginning, don't worry about matching the instructor's breathing instructions exactly; just don't hold your breath.
  • DON'T LEAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF CORPSE POSE: Most yoga classes end with Corpse pose, also called Sav asana (pronounced sha-VASS-ahnah). With this pose, you lie flat on your back, close your eyes, and relax. You never want to walk out of a class when they are in Corpse pose. If you must leave, do it before.
  • NAMASTE: Don't be scared off when your instructor bows her head as if in prayer, clasps her hands together in front of her heart and says, "Namaste" (pronounced nah-mas-TAY). You'll notice the class says it back as well. This Sanskrit word means "I honor you" and is normally said at the end of class.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Cassandra has been a practitioner of yoga for more than 20 years. Her yoga teacher training is in Samapatti Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga which is a practice that seeks to make yoga accessible to Every Body. She believes that in yoga’s 8-fold path, there is something for Every Body – regardless of frame, size, weight, medical conditions, gender, life experiences and circumstances, or any of the other ways that we perceive ourselves to be different. From meditation to asanas (body work) to pranayama (breathing), and all other areas that yoga entails on the 8-fold path, she believes that Every Body can benefit from some element of yoga practice.

In addition to studying Samapatti Yoga, Cassandra also studies and practices Hatha, Iyengar, and Kundalini Yoga. When not practicing yoga, Cassandra is a Linguistics & Communications Professor.

In October 2014, Bloomberg Philanthropies invited mayors to collaborate with artists and arts organizations to develop innovative projects that engage residents and attract visitors. 237 cities submitted proposals, affirming the many ways in which the arts can celebrate, address, and advance critical urban issues. In March 2015, Bloomberg Philanthropies announced 12 finalist cities that presented innovative ideas and were poised to make significant local impact. These proposals covered a range of areas such as revitalization of decayed downtown areas, underutilized waterfronts, and vacant neighborhoods. They also addressed other social issues including civil rights, neighborhood safety, environmental sustainability, and promoting city identity.

In June 2015, the Public Art Challenge selected four winning teams to receive $1 million each over the next two years: Gary, IN; Los Angeles, CA; Spartanburg, SC; and a collaborative team from Albany, Schenectady and Troy, NY.

Visit arthouse to view photos of each of the four winning teams.  This is a self-guided walk inside the building during daily business hours from 11am - 3pm, Monday through Friday. The viewing is approximately 15 minutes to view all four team pictures.

KITCHEN POETS: Baking with Nikki Patin

KITCHEN POETS: Baking with Nikki Patin will focus on the art of making the perfect scone, as well as the parallels between poetry and baking. Nikki will guide participants in how to make the perfect fruit and nut scone, from beginning to end. She’ll also discuss how baking and writing poetry use some of the same techniques: the right mix of ingredients (words), heat (inspiration) and time (rhyme/rhythm). The attendees will learn, as they bake their scones, that recipes, like poems, can forever be perfected and refined and are never really finished, but merely abandoned in favor of new explorations. The goal is for everyone to walk away with warm scones in their bellies and a poem in their hearts.
