Gary Food Council - Monthly Meeting February 2018

the Gary community now has a local food policy council. Formation efforts started in the spring of 2017 and the group now meets on a regular monthly basis. The Gary Food Council’s mission is to deliver sustainable solutions and opportunities for healthy, local food access within our Gary neighborhoods. The goal is to have city government and local businesses and community residents work together to achieve success in meeting a variety of an ever growing list of goals.

The Gary Food Council is addressing representation of all sectors of the food system to accomplish their mission. The food system should include, but is not limited to, the following food components:

  1. Growing

  2. Harvesting

  3. Processing

  4. Packaging

  5. Transporting

  6. Marketing

  7. Consuming

  8. Disposing

We would like to invite you to join in the movement by representing one or more of the above segments at the food council meetings. Remember, at minimum, we are all food consumers and the meetings are open to the public, so your voice is needed.

Please consider joining us. Feel free to call me for more information about how you could be involved.

BEGINNERS YOGA CLASS

This beginner’s yoga series introduces the fundamentals of yoga, meditation, and breathwork. In this Hatha Yoga-based class we will practice poses (asanas) and stretches, in combination with breathwork and meditation in order to develop flexibility, tools for stress and anxiety reduction, better health, and relaxation. These classes will help to bring balance, strength, and calmness to you, the practitioner. This class is great for Beginners to Levels 1 and 2 yoga practitioners.

Please Note: Yoga mats and/or Yoga blocks will NOT be provided.

Classes are each week February 15 - March 22

This event is free, and open to public. CLICK TO RSVP, strongly encouraged!

HELPFUL TIPS, STUDIO ETIQUETTE & GUIDELINES

  • GET THERE EARLY: Arrive at least ten minutes before your yoga class to get a spot where you feel most comfortable.
  • WHAT TO WEAR: Wear clothing that is both comfortable and made from breathable fabric (like cotton, bamboo or jersey).
  • WHAT TO BRING: Please bring your own yoga mat and an optional 1-2 blocks if possible. There will NOT be any mats provided.
  • AFTER YOU ARRIVE: Take off your shoes and socks in the room.
  • COMMUNICATE: Before class starts, introduce yourself to the instructor. Tell the instructor whether you have any injuries, especially a recent one, so he or she can give you modifications.
  • BREATHE: It's common for new students to hold their breath during yoga poses they find challenging. Breathing deeply can help you relax. In the beginning, don't worry about matching the instructor's breathing instructions exactly; just don't hold your breath.
  • DON'T LEAVE IN THE MIDDLE OF CORPSE POSE: Most yoga classes end with Corpse pose, also called Sav asana (pronounced sha-VASS-ahnah). With this pose, you lie flat on your back, close your eyes, and relax. You never want to walk out of a class when they are in Corpse pose. If you must leave, do it before.
  • NAMASTE: Don't be scared off when your instructor bows her head as if in prayer, clasps her hands together in front of her heart and says, "Namaste" (pronounced nah-mas-TAY). You'll notice the class says it back as well. This Sanskrit word means "I honor you" and is normally said at the end of class.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Cassandra has been a practitioner of yoga for more than 20 years. Her yoga teacher training is in Samapatti Yoga, a form of Hatha Yoga which is a practice that seeks to make yoga accessible to Every Body. She believes that in yoga’s 8-fold path, there is something for Every Body – regardless of frame, size, weight, medical conditions, gender, life experiences and circumstances, or any of the other ways that we perceive ourselves to be different. From meditation to asanas (body work) to pranayama (breathing), and all other areas that yoga entails on the 8-fold path, she believes that Every Body can benefit from some element of yoga practice.

In addition to studying Samapatti Yoga, Cassandra also studies and practices Hatha, Iyengar, and Kundalini Yoga. When not practicing yoga, Cassandra is a Linguistics & Communications Professor.

BEYOND THE GLASS | PART TWO

We are back with another session....join us!

Beyond the Glass is a God-breathed idea? I spent many years being a wife & mom. I gave so much to my family that I sacrificed my own desires and aspirations. With my daughter off to college I spent much of my time asking God to give me something of substance, something I could grow and that would bless others.

One day I woke up and it came to me...paint bottles!, and although it may have sound a little strange, It was different and I did exactly that!! Yes, there were challenges and lessons learned along the way but when Gods got a plan and you are willing, all things are possible. The mission of Beyond the Glass is to give people a moment of Freedom to express art from deep within and create lasting memories.

in this session, attendees will have a hands on experience on how to paint a beautiful piece of art. All attendees will have a beyond the glass experience and take home their masterpiece to display for friends and family.

PitchFeast @ ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen

Admission for this event is $25.00!

Join us on Monday October 16th as we collaborate for PitchFeast ArtHouse: A Social Kitchen in Gary, Indiana!.  Recipient of the Bloomberg Philanthropies winning "Public Art Challenge", the Arthouse: A Social Kitchen is a place for collaboration and culinary.  Find out more about the Bloomberg Public Art Challenge here

The theme for this event will focus on individuals who have participated in the ArtHouse's Culinary Business Incubator.  Our event partner Seedling Distribution, Seedling University and Market, is a total community placemaking initiative that seeks to build grocery stores, leverage grocery store as distribution center for mobile markets, and train local residents as entrepreneurs and staff.

PitchFeast is a 501(c)(3) public charity and crowdfunding dinner, which serves as an innovative fundraising program for small businesses, under-resourced entrepreneurs and creatives.  It is a monthly community meal in which a ticket gives you not only food and fellowship, but also the opportunity to FUNdraise for a creative, Indianapolis idea. PitchFeast welcomes all kind of creative types for a unique crowd-sourcing competition that leverages the power of the community to fund innovative ideas.

Attendees pay a nominal entry fee and that fee provides them with dinner, beverages and one vote. Guests then hear the innovative ideas of  locally based entrepreneurs.  Each entrepreneur is given 3-5 minutes to pitch their ideas and concepts to an audience who will then vote for the one they like the most.

The winner of the “PitchFeast” receives a cash prize, in addition to other professional services that contribute to the development and sustainability of the business or social project.

For more information, check out the FAQ on our website at www.pitchfeast.org or contact ArtHouse : Melinda melinda@arthousegary.com or 219.979.8156

Tickets may be purchased at the door, EventBrite or by downloading the Givelify app. www.givelify.com Once on the app locate Pitchfeast and make a $25.00 donation with your name, that is considered your ticket purchase.
